Ferrari have changed the gearbox on Felipe Massa's car, thus incurring a five place penalty on the starting grid. The aim of this is to allow his teammate, Fernando Alonso, to move up to seventh place on the grid.
This is a strategic decision by the Italian team, and in addition to moving Alonso up one place it allows him to start on the clean side of the track, giving him more room for manoeuvre at the start, and possibly giving him a greater chance of keeping alive his title hopes against Sebastian Vettel. Ferrari have confirmed that they understand that the gear box change can be interpreted as a legitimate strategy.
