Higuaín is being made to pay for the dip in form from Real Madrid's strike force, where only Cristiano Ronaldo has maintained his numbers from last season. Both Benzema and Higuaín, who have been sharing the duties up front with CR7, are off the pace in terms of goal scoring this season. Mourinho's rotations have not borne fruit: Benzema has scored just 13 goals (6 in the league, 4 in the Copa and 3 in the Champions) in 2,165 minutes (a goal every 166 minutes) and Higuaín has scored a paltry 9 goals (8 in the league and 1 in the Supercup) in 1,361 minutes (a goal every 151 minutes).

The results of AS' on-line survey however don't pull any punches. 44% of those who answered the question "Who would you sell: Benzema or Higuaín?" said the club should move Higuaín on to make room for new signings. The Argentine was nearly out of the door in the summer of 2012, but changed his mind when faced with the Bernabéu chanting "Pipita, stay!" after the team won the league. That said the contract renewal he was promised (4.5 million euros a year until 2017) is yet to materialise.

Benzema can count on more support among the Madrid faithful with only 21% saying they would sell the Frenchman. 26% though say they would sell both. Just 10% would keep both players - meaning 90% of Real Madrid fans see the need to change something up front.

As this paper revealed yesterday Real Madrid are actively sounding out the market, with Falcao, Agüero, Neymar, Dzeko, Cavani and Yarmolenko on the possible shopping list.
