Four players each from Barcelona and Real Madrid have made it into French sports newspaper L'Equipe's team of 2012.
Iker Casillas, Sergio Ramos, Xabi Alonso and Cristiano Ronaldo were the representatives for 'Los Blancos', while Leo Messi, Andrés Iniesta, Jordi Alba and Xavi Hernández were chosen from the Catalan outfit.
Bayern Munich right-back Philipp Lahm, Manchester City centre-back Vincent Kompany and Chelsea midfielder Ramires made up the rest of the 11 players, voted for by the newspaper's journalists.
The newspaper, which dedicated its front cover for Thursday to Barça and Madrid, explained the two clubs so dominated its team of the year "because six of these players - Casillas, Ramos, Iniesta, Xavi, Alba and Alonso - helped Spain retain the European Championship, while the other two players, the Argentine Messi and the Portuguese Ronaldo, are the best players in the world".
Casillas, who lost his place in 2011 to Bayern Munich stopper Manuel Neuer, returned to the list because "he had recovered his status as the best goalkeeper in the world".
The 'L'Equipe' team for 2011 consisted of:
Neuer; Dani Alves, Nemanja Vidic, Gerard Piqué, Marcelo; Sergio Busquets, David Silva, Xavi, Iniesta, Messi and Ronaldo.
