For the fourth time in their history Barcelona have topped the world club rankings, as calculated by the International Federation of Football History and Statistics (IFFHS). After taking the award in 1997, 2009 and 2011 the Catalan giants took their fourth annual crown for 2012.
The current Spanish domination of world football was reflected in the fact that five of the top 12 clubs are Spanish: Atlético Madrid (4th), Real Madrid (7th), Athletic (11th) and Valencia (12th).
The other clubs making up the golden dozen are Chelsea (2nd), Boca Juniors (3rd), Corinthians (5th), Bayern Munich (6th), Juventus (8th), Borussia Dortmund (9th), Olympique Lyon (10th).
The IFFHS compiles the ranking by awarding points for wins and draws in official matches. Noticeably Europa League wins are worth 12 points, while Champions League wins are worth 14, explaining to some extent Atlético's high ranking, given their success in the former competition in 2012.
