Chelsea coach Rafa Benítez has defended Fernando Torres from criticism now that his striker has gone seven games in the Premier League without scoring a goal.

Torres failed to find the net again on Sunday in the Blues 2-1 win over Arsenal, leading to further criticism from supporters and the English press, but Benítez reaffirmed his faith in his compatriot.

"These people who like to quote stats and stats, they don't have any clue about what is going on," said the Spanish manager.

And he justified Torres's goal drought by saying the player was exhausted from playing too many games as the club's only striker.

"When you have one striker for a month and a half and cannot change, it's more difficult for the striker.

Since signing for Chelsea two years ago, Torres has scored just 14 times in the Premier League in 69 games and appears under pressure following the signing of forward Demba Ba from Newcastle at the start of January.

"Fernando was doing a great job," added Benítez.

"Afterwards, Demba gave us something we didn't have before.

"When you have now two strikers, you can manage."
