Chelsea coach Rafael Benítez was delighted after watching his team thrash Aston Villa 8-0 at Stamford Bridge, but stressed that the most important thing was that the team "progressed and improved".
Spanish striker Fernando Torres scored the game's opening goal after just three minutes. Goals from David Luiz and Branislav Ivanovic made it 3-0 at half-time, while Frank Lampard, Oscar, Eden Hazard and a double from Ramires completed the rout.
Spanish midfielder Juan Mata was named Man of the Match but did not get on the score sheet.
"Now we have to keep this run up, keep winning games and then it'll be easier for me to send out a message that we can compete," said Benítez after the game.
The coach explained that in training his team had been trying to "make a few adjustments and up to now everything is looking positive".
"Everything impressed me about the performance of the team. We have been talking before about the mentality of the team; attacking, creating chances, we had good movement, we were good in defence. As a team we had the balance we are looking for."
Benítez also emphasised that Frank Lampard, who scored Chelsea's fourth goal but whose contract runs out at the end of the season, was still "a very important player" for the Blues.
"He trained well and is doing well. His commitment is there. Everything is positive. It is still a long season to play but he is doing well."
