Karim Benzema knows how to enjoy the greatest moments of his career, but he's not one of those players who rejoices too much in his success.
However, after his brilliant performance last Saturday against Athletic Bilbao, in which he forced the opening goal (an own goal by Jon Aurtenetxe), scored a superb goal of his own (his sixth of the season) and provided the assist for Mesut Özil's goal, the French forward felt particularly happy, both with his own performance and that of the team.
"The most significant thing is that the Real Madrid of last season has returned," Benzema told AS.
"We played some lovely football out there, and our overall movement on the pitch was particularly good."
Was this, as the press have been calling it, his best performance since arriving at Real Madrid in 2009?
"I can't say that it has been my most complete game because I've had other games that were more decisive. But the most important thing for me is that, after my hip injury, I'm in great shape. After two weeks out I needed to experience the joy of playing football once again."
Best moments in a Madrid shirt
Among the games Benzema remembers most fondly is the return leg of the Quarter Finals of the Copa del Rey against Barcelona last season at the Camp Nou, when he came off the bench and scored by chipping the ball over Carles Puyol and slamming the ball past Pinto. He also mentions the two goals he scored against former club Lyon in the Bernabéu in the last 16 of the Champions League in 2011.
However, Benzema assured AS: "My best game is still to come!"
Perhaps it will come on Wednesday, when Madrid face City at the Etihad stadium on Wednesday, a game Benzema cannot wait to play in
"On Saturday when I was in the shower after the Athletic game, I started to think about the City game," he said.
