Vicente del Bosque equaled Ladislao Kubala's record of 68 games in charge of Spain tonight, against Uruguay. The current coach took over from Luis Aragonés after 'La Roja' triumphed in the European Championships in Austria and Switzerland in 2008.
Del Bosque, from Salamanca, previously coached at Real Madrid and at Turkish club Besiktas; his first game in charge for Spain was 20 August 2008, with a victory in a friendly in Copenhagen against Denmark, 0-3. In that game Xabi Alonso scored 2 and Xavi Hernández 1, though both are absent tonight.
Since that night Del Bosque has been in charge 67 times, not counting this evening's game, and taken Spain to victories at the World Cup in South Africa in 2010, and retained their European Championship in 2012 in Poland and Ukraine.
Under Del Bosque's watchful eye Spain have won 56, drawn five and lost six, with 167 goals in favour and 44 against, statistics that put make him numerically the best coach, with the most victories. Kubala was in charge for nearly 11 years, from October 1969 to June 1980. His Spain managed 31 victories, 21 draws and 16 defeats.
