Spain's national team captain Iker Casillas voted for Jose Mourinho. Vicente Del Bosque and Roberto Di Matteo for the Men's Coach of the Year category, and Sergio Ramos, Cristiano Ronaldo and Messi for the Best Player of 2012 award. Votes from all national team coaches and captains were collected two months ago when the keeper's relationship with Mourinho was nowhere near as tense as it has been in recent weeks.
In Zurich, Casillas was once again voted as the best goalkeeper in the world by the International Federation of Professional Footballers (FIFPro). The keeper now finds himself in one of the most testing moments of his career and this latest accolade is sure to come as a boost to his confidence. Last night, the world football community showed their admiration for the Real Madrid skipper, voting him the world's number one in his position for the fifth year running. Since 2008, Iker has always featured in FIFPro's World XI.
And the award which he received last night in Zurich is just the latest recognition for the Madrid custodian. Last week, the International Federation of Football History and Statistics (IFFHS) named him as the best goalkeeper on the planet for the fifth consecutive year.
After last night's gala, Casillas declared that he was "very happy for the award, it demonstrates that last season was a successful one". The keeper also praised the rest of the prize winners, in particular his Madrid team mates, saying, "The fact that five Real Madrid players are in the World XI is fantastic and is a prize not just for us but for all madridistas".
Iker also took advantage of the occasion to give his support to Cristiano Ronaldo. "Messi has won the Ballon d'Or and he deserves to be congratulated for that but we are a little sad because we would have liked to have seen Cristiano win his second Ballon d'Or. It's a decision which was very difficult because all three - Messi, Cristiano and Iniesta were the best players last season".
