During an interview with O Globo's Brazilian channel, Cristiano Ronaldo revealed that "too much humility is a defect" and the player also admitted that he is the kind of person that you simply either love or loathe.
"Even God isn't able to please everybody" the Real Madrid number 7 argued, adding that as far as he is concerned, his intention is to be loved by "the majority of the public".
Looking ahead to tonight's FIFA Ballon d'Or gala in Zurich, Cristiano said, "Whether I am the best or not, that is what I work towards - being the best. I feel that's the attitude that everyone should have - regardless of their profession".
O Globo also sat down with Brazil coach Luis Felipe Scolari, who knows Cristiano well from his time as coach of the Portugal national team. According to Scolari, Cristiano's defining characteristic is his will to win. "He never wants to be second. He always battles to be number one", Scolari explained. "He is a complete player - a true professional and he should have won the Ballon d'Or at least three times by now".
Interestingly, the player who has pipped CR7 to the award in the most recent editions of the Ballon d'Or, Leo Messi, was hardly mentioned at all during the interview. The Argentinean is odds-on favourite to win the 2012 award yet the only remark about him came from Scolari who believes that Cristiano "will feel sad" at not being voted the best player on the planet and see himself beaten yet again, by Messi .
