Should he bag a brace against Real Sociedad later today, Cristiano Ronaldo will equal the 171 goals scored by Emilio Butragueño in all competitions with Real Madrid. Butragueño found the target 171 times in 463 games between 1983 and 1995 - that's a average of 0.37 goals per game. But Cristiano's figures are from another planet: 169 goals in 170 matches, which mean that he has averaged almost one goal in every game he has played for the Whites.
Should he equal El Buitre's tally, CR7 will then have his sights on the figures set by Pirri (in seventh with 172 goals in 561 games) and Gento (182 goals in 605 games).
Cristiano leads the field in terms of goals per game - 0.99 goals, which even surpasses the feats of club icons such Puskas, who averaged 0.93, Pahiño (0.86) and Alfredo Di Stéfano (0.77).
On fire in the league. Cristiano has been most prolific in the league where he averages more than a goal per game - 126 goals in 118 outings although this term he has been less effective than last season. So far, he has netted 14 times in the league, compared to the 21 goals he had scored at the same stage in 2011/12. Contrast that to the figures of Karim Benzema (four goals in the league, 10 at the same point last season), and Gonzalo Higuaín who, before his injury averaged a goal every 92 minutes - the kind of consistency which is only bettered by Leo Messi (a goal every 59 minutes) and Radamel Falcao (a goal every 82 minutes played).
Two goals for Cristiano against La Real would make him the club's eighth top goal scorer, in all competitions, of all time. And the Txuri-Urdin have proved to be one of his favourites victims - he hit a brace against the Basques in the 4-1 win at the Bernabéu in 2010/2011 and also in the most recent edition of this fixture - the 5-1 victory from March last year.
