The Real Madrid president wholeheartedly defended José Mourinho today following the criticism the Portuguese coach has received. "Here today, I would like to offer my full support for you, as well as express my faith in your work and my appreciation," Florentino Pérez said in a message that was interrupted by the rapturous applause of the club members, joined together for the insignia award ceremony.

"We have here the best trainer in the world, whose impressive career and high standards are second to none. Mourinho has had to put up with attacks and damaging and unfair remarks that have been blown out of all proportion," Florentino stressed.

"We have built a dream team, an incredible team that includes some of the best players in the world who are able to meet all the challenges thrown at them. A team that has won La Liga and has started the season by lifting the Supercopa de España, setting the standards we need to follow. For Real Madrid every goal is attainable - the players know it and the coach knows it."

During the event, held in IFEMA (Madrid's trade fair centre) with Emilio Butragueño, the director of Real Madrid's institutional relations and the master of ceremonies, Florentino Pérez awarded insignias to the 90 club members that had reached 60 years with the club, 265 celebrating their Golden wedding anniversaries (50 years) and the 1,794 that reached their silver anniversaries (25 years).

"This is recognition of your loyalty and your club. We appreciate all that you've done and your commitment over the years," Florentino told the guests of honour during his speech, in which also stressed the importance of Real Madrid's institutional stability.

The members, and only the members, will decide which route the club follows," the president said as he insisted that the club's objective is for "Real Madrid to always be about its members."

"This is the most important club, a universal brand. My only power here is what you all give me. Some people wanted to manipulate the running of the club, but we've shown them that here the only owners are the members," he concluded.
