German referee Christian Fischer has declared he will bring legal action against the Benfica captain Luisao, who assulted him in a friendly last night between Benfica and Fortuna Dusseldorf in Germany, causing the game to be abandoned.
The 42-year-old referee said he was "appalled" after being hit by Luisao and planned to sue the Bazilian player. Fischer lay unconscious for several minutes after he was struck by Luisao and had to be attended to by medics in the dressing rom.
The incident took place in the 43rd minute of the game, when the score was 0-0. Fischer had just shown a second yellow card to Javi García, followed by a red. Luisao was furious with the decision and ran up to Fischer and pushed him to the floor.
The Fortuna president Peter Frymuth was furious with Luisao after the game and said he would launch an oficial complaint to UEFA. However, Benfica and Luisao have said that Fischer was play acting, and reiterated that the player had not pushed the referee very hard.
