Higuaín: "We've been here before and still won the title"

"I hope we can prolong Atlético Madrid's long run without beating us so that we don't slip even further behind. We are still very confident that we can win something this season."

Higuaín: "Estábamos así cuando llegué y fuimos campeones"

Gonzalo Higuaín has refused to concede the title to Barcelona, despite the fact that Real Madrid are now 11 points behind Tito Vilanova's side in the league table, after losing 1-0 to Real Betis on the weekend.

When the Argentine striker joined first arrived at the Santiago Bernabéu, in January 2007, Madrid were trailing Barcelona and Sevilla in the title race but finished the season as league champions, and he believes he and his team-mates can stage another dramatic turnaround this year.

We are a huge number of points behind them, we are competing against great teams but I have no doubt that this team has the squad to win the title," said 'El Pipita'.

"We were in this position when I arrived but we ended up winning the league. It seems crazy, but I have no doubt we can do it. It's not in our hands, and we'll need other results to go our way, but we have the squad to keep fighting till the end and that's what we'll do."

The defeat to Betis: "It was a close game and we had our chances to win, there were two key moments when the referee got it wrong, with the penalty [in the last minute] and the goal [Benzema's second half effort which was ruled offside], which would have changed the game. It's not an excuse, but it happened and many people saw it, but Betis also won because they have a great squad and they are having a good season. Unfortunately, we couldn't get the result we wanted."

Hopes for the season: "I hope we can prolong Atlético Madrid's long run without beating us so that we don't slip even further behind. We are still very confident that we can win something this season. This team has the squad to do that. We still have three trophies to play for and we'll try and do our best to win them."

His Injury: "It's still too soon to think about when I will return but I'm on my way back and my recovery is going well. It's now been three weeks since my injury [a hamstring tear against Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League], it was a nasty tear. But things are going well, we're going to do a further examination and then it'll be decided when I return. If things continue as they are I won't be out for very long.

I'm frustrated by the injury. The truth is that I suffer a lot when I am out of action because it's not the same being away from the action compared to being on the pitch when you can help the team out. I really suffer on the sidelines. I hope that when I return we'll be a bit closer to Barcelona and Atlético so we can put pressure on them."

The Champions League: "The crucial thing is that we have qualified, we didn't finish first, as we would have liked, but we are still in it. We've still got one game to go [with Ajax] against a great side and we're going to try and win it."
