Football is about frame of mind. If anyone is unsure all they have to do is check the results of the AS.com polls, carried out to gauge what Real Madrid, Barcelona and Málaga fans prefer ahead of the draw for the quarter finals of the Champions League on Friday. Real Madrid and Barcelona fans, both buoyed by their respective wins against Manchester United and Milan, aren't afraid of another European Clásico. The biggest case for renewed optimism belongs to Barcelona after coming back from two-nil down in the first leg to soundly beat Milan 4-0 in the Camp Nou. Further proof of their newly found swagger can be seen in that fact that their fans prefer Bayern and Madrid, previously seen as two teams that could certainly spoil the azulgrana party.
In Madrid Galatasaray... or Barcelona
Galatasaray, dubbed the Cinderella of the draw, are at the top of Madrid and Malaga's list. In the case of Madrid, the alternatives are Bayern or Barcelona, two of their biggest rivals, historically, barring the rivalry a little closer to home, against Atlético Madrid.
Of the readers to have voted, 36% see Galatasaray as the best rivals for Madrid, followed by Barcelona (22%) and Bayern (13%). These are followed by PSG (11%) and Juventus (9%). Finally, and as something of a surprise, Madrid fans are keen to avoid Málaga (5% of the votes) and most of all Borussia Dortmund (4%), quite possibly because of the fine performances the German side put in against Mdrid in the group stages.
Barcelona and the big time
Even more striking are the teams chosen by the Barça fans: Pep Guardiola's new team next season, Bayern Munich, is favourite by a country mile (48% of votes), ahead of Real Madrid and Galatasary, who both had 14% of the votes. As with Real Madrid, they wanted to avoid an all Spanish clash, with Málaga receiving the lowest number of votes (3%). Borussia Dortmund received 6% of the votes, Juventus 7% .The Barça fans also wanted to avoid the threat of Ibrahimovic and PSG, who only received 6% of the votes
Málaga go for Galatasaray
In terms of Málaga's next rivals, the results are less surprising: the overwhelming favourite is Galatasaray (49%), while the biggest threats are seen as Real Madrid (5%), Bayern (3%) and particularly Barcelona (2%). The Málaga faithful are clealry wary of Barcelona after their slick performance against Milan and the fact that they knocked Pellegrini's side out of the Copa del Rey at the quarter final stage.
For Málaga fans, the next best behind Galatasaray come in the form of the star-studded PSG (23%) or historic Juventus (10%), a side they prefer over Borussia Dortmund (8%).
