Jordi Roura, Barcelona's assistant coach, could take charge of the team for their away game against Real Valladolid on Saturday evening, after it was announced that Tito Vilanova has suffered a cancer relapse.
Vilanova chose Roura as his assistant last summer from a long list of names and will coach the team on the weekend if Vilanova's absence is confirmed.
What is more uncertain however, is who would be the team's coach if Vilanova is ruled out of action for the rest of the season.
The Catalan Roura, like Vilanova, got his football education in the Barcelona academy. He made his debut for the club in 1988 but made just 10 appearances in a Barça shirt owing to a serious knee injury. He later went on to play for second division sides Real Murcia and Figueres.
He joined Barcelona's coaching staff in 2009 and was the promoted to assistant coach of the first team in the summer of 2012.
