FIFA president Joseph Blatter said that Barcelona forward Leo Messi, who recently claimed his fourth Ballon d'Or ahead of Ronaldo and Iniesta, is "the best footballer in the world". "Today, Messi is the best and we are very proud that the people who took part in the voting gave him the award in such overwhelming fashion", said Blatter to website FIFA.com

Blatter said, however, that given that the final three candidates were invited to the event it would be better "if three medals were awarded, so that the other two don't go away empty handed". "We need to think about that for future editions", he postulated.
