Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema was caught driving at 216 kilometres per hour on a motorway on the outskirts of Madrid on 3 February, just hours after Madrid had lost 0-1 to Granada. The Frenchman was driving at 116 kilometres per hour over the speed limit.

The radar also detected a Porsche rented by the club, with an unidentified driver, driving even faster than Benzema, at 260 kilometres per hour.

The pair were driving close to La Finca, an exclusive suburb of Madrid inhabited by celebrities.

Benzema was ordered before a judge on Tuesday to declare before a court for a crime against road safety, for exceeding the speed limit by more than 80 kilometres per hour.

Real Madrid confirmed the facts, and declared that the player went to the court to ask for the case to be delayed, owing to the importance of the match at the Camp Nou on Tuesday night.

Benzema could face a possible prison sentence of between three and six months, or ordered to pay a fine of between five and 400 euros a day for between six and 12 months.
