On Monday, Real Madrid completed the first of the two training sessions they have to finalize their preparations for Wednesday's Copa del Rey semi-final against Barcelona. It was the first session in which the squad was joined by Diego López, who completed his move back to the Bernabéu from Sevilla this weekend. The goalkeeper was formally presented to the media after the session.
López had trained with goalkeeping coach Silvino Louro on Saturday evening and again on Sunday following the 4-0 win over Getafe but this was his first time with the group. He joined Jesús Fernández in following orders from Silvino Louro in Valdebebas. Iker Casillas is still convalescing after fracturing his left thumb and is expected to be out of action for the next two to three months.
José Mourinho took the players who were involved in Sunday's game against Getafe through a light recovery workout. Those players included: Adán, Carvalho, Albiol, Essien, Khedira, Özil, Cristiano Ronaldo and Higuaín. Joining them, were Castilla players Nacho Fernández and Álvaro Morata who both featured in Sunday's mini-Clásico against Barcelona B.
Mourinho excused three players who will not figure in Wednesday's Cup clash - Sergio Ramos, Fabio Coentrao and Ángel Di María while Luka Modric also failed to be seen out on the practice pitches at Real Madrid City. All four are reported to have worked out inside the club gym. Also absent were injured stars Casillas and Pepe.
The players will put in one final training session on Tuesday morning at 11 o'clock. That session will be conducted behind closed doors as Mourinho is expected to rehearse his gameplan for the Barça game with a changed XI due to the numerous absentees through injury and suspension.
