The former Brazil coach, Mario Jorge Lobo Zagallo, admitted in an interview published in the newspaper Correio Braziliense that Argentina's Lionel Messi was the best in the world, but did go on to say that he shouldn't be compared with the Brazil legend as "there was only one Pelé".
"Messi is the best player in the world because of what he has done and is doing with Barcelona, but please, don't compare him to Pelé," insisted the former Brazil player and trainer. Zagallo, 81, is the only person to win four World Cups (1958 and 1962 as a player, 1970 as a trainer and 1994 as technical coordinator). Zagallo also said: "Nobody is ever going to score 1,281 goals like Pelé did."
He also added that Pelé won three world cups with Brazil whereas Messi was yet to find success with Argentina, something he believes adds to a player's status.
If Zagallo's predictions are correct, Messi won't be crowned champion in the Brazil 2014 World Cup either.
"We'll do whatever we can to win the World Cup because losing two world cups at home will be unacceptable," he said in reference to the 1950 World Cup when Brazil lost to Uruguay in the Maracaná stadium, Río de Janeiro, also the venue for the final in 2014.
