The Italian referee Nicola Rizzoli has been chosen by UEFA to officiate Spain's quarter-final clash with France. Rizzoli has refereed two games in the tournament so far, France 1-1 England and Portugal 2-1 Holland.
Spanish teams have fared well in games which Rizzoli has refereed. He was in charge during Athletic Bilbao's 2-2 draw with Schalke in the quarter-finals of the Europa League last season, which saw the Basques qualify for the semi finals, and refereed the Europa League final in 2010, when Atlético Madrid beat Fulham 2-1.
Rizzoli has also refereed three Real Madrid games (one draw, two victories) and two Barcelona matches (one victory, one defeat) in the Champions League.
