Peruvian football club Universitario de Deportes will use an unusual remedy as they seek victory in the league against Cienciano next Saturday in Cuzco, at 3,399 metres above sea level.
According to Peruvian sports daily Libero.pe, the club's players, following advice from doctors, will take Viagra to try and combat the negative physical effects associated with playing sports at high altitude, owing to the reduction in oxygen.
The chemical component sildenafil, better known as Viagra, does not just help erectile dysfunction, but can also offer benefits when doing sports at high altitude.
The use of sildenafil by athletes is permitted by the World Anti Doping Agency but not all players will take the medication, as it can be a health risk in exceptional circumstances.
Universitario are not the first team to take Viagra when playing in Cuzco: Bolivian side Blooming, Chilean club Universidad Católica and Brazilian side Gremio have all taken the substance when playing Cienciano in the Copa Libertadores.
