Real Madrid are looking to sign a goalkeeper for the coming season. The club have set their sights on bringing in a high-profile, quality back-up to push Iker Casillas in training and provide competition for the captain, offering a reliable alternative if the Spain international is out of form or injured. While the Bernabéu outfit are not considering replacing Casillas, they are on the lookout for a reserve that will offer performance guarantees whenever called upon. Someone in the mould of Thibaut Cortois, currently at city rivals Atlético.

Figures within the club believe that the gap in quality is too wide between Casillas and his understudy, Antonio Adán (who before Saturday had only been used by José Mourinho in the Copa del Rey and in inconsequential fixtures). This feeling was confirmed at the weekend, with the youth product out of his depth in the defeat to Málaga. The Portuguese coach has also remained suspicious of Casillas throughout his tenure; indeed, Mourinho even called into question the keeper's position as captain on his arrival at the club.

Certain starter. Since the Champions League final in 2002, when he was left out by then coach Vicente del Bosque in favour of César, Casillas had made the jersey his own. As well as César, the World Cup-winner has vied for the number one spot with Carlos Sánchez, Diego López, the veteran Jerzy Dudek (the Pole arrived in Madrid at the age of 34) and now Adán. He has seen off the competition offered by each with ease - a situation the club want to change next season.
