The last ever Basque derby between Real Sociedad and Athletic Bilbao at San Mamés will forever remain in the memories of fans of both clubs for contrasting reasons.

La Real waved goodbye to their rivals' historic stadium in glorious fashion, taking with them three points that put them level with Valencia in the race for the final Champions League spot.

For Athletic, it was a painful goodbye that summed up their chaotic season perfectly.

Ibai Gomez gave the Marcelo Bielsa's side the lead after half an hour with a goal worthy of the occasion. The 23-year-old got on the end of a cross from the left hand side by Jon Aurtenetxe to thrash in a superb volley from 10 yards out to send the 'Cathedral' into raptures.

But the home crowd's joy was short lived, as just four minutes later Antoine Griezzmann appeared at the near post of Athletic's goal to nod in a cross from Chory Castro.

The game was on the whole an evenly matched affair but midway through the second half Philippe Montanier's men were presented with a parting gift from the hosts

24-year-old goalkeeper Raúl, picked by Bielsa ahead of veteran Gorka Iraizoz for the second game in a row, spilled a softly-struck free-kick by Castro right into the path of Imanol Agirretxe, who received the generous award gratefully.

Substitute Carlos Vela then rounded off the three points for the 'txuri urdin', receiving the ball from Zurutzua in space and curling a low shot into the bottom corner and beyond Raúl.
