Real Sociedad became the second victims of a cup upset in this season's Copa del Rey after they were knocked out of the tournament by Segunda División side Córdoba following a 2-2 draw in Anoeta.
The Basques lost the first leg 0-2 and coach Philippe Montanier sent out a strong side containing the likes of Antoine Griezmann, Chory Castro, Rubén Pardo and Imanol Agirretxe in an attempt to overturn the deficit.
They got off to the perfect start when Griezmann opened the scoring on 20 minutes, and despite the Frenchman being offside when Pardo played the ball into him, the goal stood.
The visitors reacted well to going behind but could not create any real chances. Chory Castro came close to doubling the lead while Griezmann managed three attempts at goal with his head, but none of them went in.
La Real's chances dried up in the second half as they struggled on a rain soaked pitch, and Kike made their task all the harder when he headed in a free-kick to equalise, meaning the hosts needed a further three goals to win the tie. Dubarbier then sealed the upset with a goal just six minutes later, and although Agirretxe got a late equaliser, it was not enough to prevent La Real from exiting the competition.
