Defender Sergio Ramos holds the unwanted record of having been sent off more times than any other Real Madrid player. In eight years at the Santiago Bernabéu, the Spain international has now seen red 16 times, ahead of the 14 dismissals that Real legend Fernando Hierro received in 14 years at the heart of the Madrid defence.
Ramos has been given his marching orders 12 times in La Liga, with the two most recent red cards coming from the same referee, José Luis Paradas Romero. In addition, he has been sent off twice in the Champions League and on a further two occasions in the Copa del Rey. In league football, the World Cup-winner is two ahead of Hierro, but he still trails the 18 early baths collected by former Sevilla club-mate Pablo Alfaro and Xavier Aguado, ex of Real Zaragoza. At Real, Ramos is also ahead of Hugo Sánchez and Guti, both on seven. It is also curious to note that he has never been shown a red card while playing for Spain, despite amassing 98 caps so far.
