Atlético Madrid boss Diego Simeone admitted tonight after defeat in Portugal against Académica that his team didn't live up to expectations and acknowledged that their opponents had a "good" match and "won well."
"We didn't play the match we would have wanted to play" explained the coach in a post-match press conference, according to a report from the Spanish club. At the same time Simeone regretted that his outfit wasn't "consistently stable" on the night their impressive 16-match European winning streak came to an end.
"Académica had a good match; they took advantage of their chances and won well. They closed up well, moved the ball effectively and we couldn't get through their defence except when Raúl García had his chance in the first half and from a few crosses", continued Simeone.
"We controlled the match in the first half but we didn't create chances. We had moments of higher intensity."
"In the second half we started well and we could have pulled one back, but we didn't manage it" the coach went on.
"Does a part of the blame go to attitude? Absolutely not. We had a spell of intensity in the first half and another in the second half and we felt better then."
