Spain will finish the year at number one in the FIFA world rankings. Vicente del Bosque's men will see out the year at the top of the heap for the fifth consecutive year, heading up a select band of national sides to have occupied first place since the system was created in 1993.

Since 2008 - the year in which 'La Roja' sealed glory at the European Championships in Austria and Switzerland - the Spaniards have ended each calendar year ahead of the rest in the official rankings produced by world football's governing body.

What's more, the figures posted by the world and European champions back up their status as the world's best. 2012 has seen 13 wins and just three draws, as well as victory at Euro 2012 - the third time the country has tasted success at the European Championships.

Only seven national teams have reached the summit since the classification system was introduced: Germany, Brazil, Italy, France, Argentina, Holland and Spain. Spain have now remained at the top of the FIFA rankings, updated monthly, since August 2011.

They first came to top spot in July 2008 after their triumph in Vienna, and have only dropped down for brief periods (July to October 2009; April to May 2010; and in August 2011). In total, Spain have spent 46 months as FIFA's top-rated national side.
