The English Football Association (FA) have fined the Spanish Liverpool player Jesús Fernández 'Suso' 10,000 pounds (12,300 euros) for calling his team-mate José Enrique Sánchez "gay" on Twitter.
The 19-year-old replied to a picture posted by Enrique on the social network site, in which the defender was getting his teeth whitened.
Suso responded: "What f*** is he doing? This guy is gay... he does everything except play football."
According to the FA, Suso "acted in a way which was improper and/or brought the game into disrepute" by posting the comment which "included a reference to a person/s sexual orientation and/or disability".
Suso made his debut for Liverpool in September of this year during a 5-3 win over Young Boys in the Europa League and has made a total of 13 appearances for Brendan Rogers's side this season. He signed a long-term contract with the club in October.
Enrique has defended his team-mate and compatriot, insisting the comment was not derogatory, tweeting: "Is amazing how fa can fine my friend @suso30fernandez for a banter thing. Was just a joke (sic)!!!"
