Valencia's mayor Rita Barberá labelled the halt in the agreement between Bankia and Valencia to restart work on the new Mestalla stadium "very bad news" today. The project has been at a standstill since February 2009.

In front of the press, Barberá lamented the banking group's exit from the Newcoval company, made up in equal parts of Bankia Hábitat and the Aedifica group, which last December made a commitment to restart work on the new Valencia stadium.

Asked about the matter, after the inauguration of the international festival of video games and electronic sports Dreamhack, the mayor explained that she found out about the news yesterday through a "message."

She called the Bankia president José Ignacio Goirigolzarri so he could confirm the news and explain the reasons the banking group was leaving the company that had predicted to complete the stadium work in two years.

Goirigolzarri explained to her that "certain agreed targets hadn't been met with the company", although the mayor said she was unaware of the nature of these "targets."

"What I know is that it's bad news and we'll have to wait for the decision that Valencia makes", concluded Barberá.
