Atlético Madrid midfielder Tiago Mendes had to be substituted during Atlético Madrd's 2-2 draw with Sevilla on Wednesday night at the Sánchez Pizjuán after receiving a kick from Sevilla midfielder Gary Medel to his right arm in the 23^rd minute, when the Chilean attempted to clear a high ball.

Tiago attempted to continue playing after the incident for a few minutes but was in visible pain and he was soon replaced by Mario Suárez.

The club confirmed on Thursday that medical tests have revealed that the Portuguese has a broken arm and he underwent an operation on Thursday morning.

The club have not stated how long he will be out of action for but he has been ruled out of the league game with Málaga on Sunday.
