Barcelona coach Tito Vilanova went into hospital on Thursday to treat a tumour on the parotid gland on Tuesday, which was discovered on Tuesday. Vilanova had a tumour on the same gland removed just over a year ago.
The club released a brief statement on their website to say that Vilanova had been operated on. It read:
"Tito Vilanova's surgery went ahead according to schedule this Thursday morning. The manager's post-surgery recovery will determine his stay at hospital.
In line with the patient's wishes, please respect the privacy and confidentiality of the process.
It's worth noting that Jordi Roura will lead the first team in Tito Vilanova's absence."
It is believed the coach will stay in hospital for a further three or four days following the operation and will then undergo radiotherapy and chemotherapy for six weeks, but will be able to continue coaching the club during this period.
