Spain coach Vicente del Bosque has defended the Spanish Federation's decision to fly 'La Roja' to Panama for their friendly game next Wednesday.

The game on Wednesday will be Spain's fifth trip to the Americas since they won the World Cup in 2010 and the Federation has been criticised due to the long journeys the players have to make to play these fixtures.

But Del Bosque declared he supported the friendly games in the Americas and denied he had left out any players at the request of club coaches.

"We don't want to go against any club, but we are committed to playing the game in Panama and we have chosen the players we think are best suited to the occasion," he told a press conference in Tenerife.

"We are playing on this date, just like every other team in the world. Every trip to Europe normally means we arrive home at five in the morning, without sleeping. However, when we play in the Americas, everyone says we must be tired. We are no exception - every national side is playing on this date."

He added he would like to see Spain play a match in Tenerife in the future, but recognised that it was far from the only Spanish locality that wants to see the World and European champions in action.

"We would be delighted to play here but there is huge demand for the national team all over Spain."

Del Bosque said he had not yet cast his votes for the Ballon d'Or, but said he would "make the most of my vote so that the players we want to win it can win. Our desire, of course, is that a Spanish player wins it."

Del Bosque also had generous words for the only player in his side to come from Tenerife, Pedro Rodríguez.

"He has always been a disciplined player with a lot of character who has always wanted to make his mark in games. He's always desperate to play, when you give him the signal he takes less than a minute to put his kit on."
