Earlier this week Atlético Madrid coach Diego Simeone declared that he had never swapped shirts with a rival player.
The Argentine was speaking to 'ABC Punto Radio' about the influence former Argentina coach Carlos Bilardo had on him.
"He always told me to never swap shirts with the opposition, because my shirt was worth more than theirs. And so I never gave my shirt to a rival player," said Simeone.
However, Simeone did in fact swap shirts with a rival player once, with none other than David Beckham.
Simeone was playing for Inter Milan against Manchester United at Old Trafford in the Champions League quarter finals, in March 1999. It was the first time the two players had met since the previous summer, when Beckham had kicked out at Simeone during a second round World Cup game between England and Argentina, for which the winger was given a straight red card. Simeone had been criticised for overreacting to Beckham's kick, with many believing his reaction caused Beckham to be sent off.
Manchester United won the tie 2-0 thanks to two goals by Dwight Yorke, both from crosses from Beckham, and after the game Beckham and Simeone swapped shirts to make the peace and bring an end to their confrontation.
