After the friendly between Euskadi and Bolivia, Xabi Alonso admitted that he hadn't decided anything about his future. The midfielder is currently under contract with 'los blancos' until 2014, but the club have already got the ball rolling to offer him a new deal. Alonso recently said that he would only sign a new contract if he could offer the same level of performances.
"I've no idea what will happen", Alonso told the media when he was asked about his contract situation at Real Madrid following the Basque side's win. Alonso was also asked about the thorny issue of Iker Casillas being left on the bench against Málaga, but remained tight-lipped: "Now is not the time to talk about that, I'll discuss it another time," he told Goal.com.
He finished by talking about Real Madrid's next match, against Real Sociedad: "Madrid need to get a result more that Real Sociedad. This time it will be a different story," he said when referring the Madrid's latest slip-up.
Essential for the club: Despite the player's own doubts, Xabi Alonso's services at the club have rarely been called into question. Talks began in November, 18 months before his current contract was due to expire, which is usually a sign that the club is interested in extending a player's services.
Although Xabi Alonso has time on his side - his contract runs until January 2014, when he will be free to talk to other clubs - 'los blancos' are keen to close the deal as soon as possible.
The majority of Madrid fans are also convinced that his renewal would be the best thing for everyone involved and believe that he is one of the cornerstones of the team. In August a poll held on As.com was further proof: 83% of voters wanted to see Xabi continue to wear the white jersey.
