Former Real Madrid academy graduate Paco Pavón has leapt to the defence of the club's youth system, and has declared "Madrid have always had the best academy in Spain", pointing out that many of the best players in the world have come from its academy, and are either playing for Madrid or playing for other top clubs in Europe.
Speaking at a charity event for Chad, Pavón said: "Everyone always wants to talk about the academy, and I believe Madrid's academy is the best in Spain and one of the best in Europe. It has always produced great players, whether they play for Madrid or for other teams."
He also rejected Barcelona director of football Andoni Zubizarreta's comments that Madrid were not brave enough to try out academy players in their first team.
"I don't think it has anything to do with being brave, it's more about necessity. The team designs its squad in July after the season, and the academy players are a part of those squads, but is only when first team players get injured that they get a chance to fill in."
